Fresh and Flavoursome

A huge fan of freshly cooked food, I like no short cuts and especially no packet, packaged and processed for me, as far as I can help it. Of course once in a while we all get lazy and give in but this is the exception in my home rather than the rule.

Thus, I was reluctant to try the range of products from Freshway Foods, a Vadodara based company, when a friend urged me too.

The packets arrived and looked attractive and the instructions easy to follow. In fact utterly simple.

Their unique freeze-dry technology, which is accepted worldwide as the best food preservation process, fascinated me. The colour, flavours and freshness of the food is preserved without affecting its nutritional value.

What’s more, their food is preservative free, which ensures it is as healthy as home-cooked food.

The Palak Paneer, which I tried first, blew me off completely. The palak was delicious and the paneer soft. It was well-spiced, was bursting with fresh flavours and I could not believe it had been created in minutes out of a packet merely by adding boiling water.

The daal makhani was equally a surprise. A laborious dal, otherwise to prepare, this one was tasty all the way and ready in minutes.  The consistency was right and the flavours reminiscent of home food.

From pulao kadhi to paneer bhurji and Veg Biryani to Moong Dal sheera, Freshway Foods offers them all. A complete vegetarian range, they have a lot of Gujarati delicacies apart from the universal favourites from all over India.

Freshway products pass through stringent quality standards and microbial tests at every stage of freeze-drying. Their strict hygiene and housekeeping regime ensures that every product is packaged with utmost hygiene and minimal wastage, keeping intact its nutritional values. That is perhaps what sets them apart.

Reasonably priced, the portions are decent too. This is the perfect solution for days when one is feeling lazy and does not want to cook and yet not order an expensive and oily takeaway. Bachelors, single working professionals and harried women can make use of their wide range.

One can order online and the packets get delivered to your doorstep.

I have actually heaved a sigh of relief now that there is a healthy food solution at hand, in terms of Freshway ready-to-eat meals. At last a brand that lives up to its promise of delivering fresh food.

Who can resist desserts? And definitely not in the festive season. So when I discovered the first-ever personalised dessert kitchen in Mumbai, I was ecstatic. Yes, Dessert Street is a boon to all us with a sweet tooth.

Available only on pre-order, you can actually customise your desserts. That is exactly what I did. High-quality couverture chocolate, a zero-preservative offering, and unique mouth-watering flavours  are what Dhawal Shah’s Dessert Street is synonymous with. This Le Cordon Bleu alumnus surely knows how to tempt us.

Entremet, Tarts, Bonbons, Thins, Truffles, Cookies and modern tarts, were what I could choose from. And yes, as per my specifications and delivered to my doorstep. Too good to be true.

My order arrived. I was excited beyond words. Beautifully packaged and the contents intact. I was impressed.

The heart-shaped petit gateau, looked inviting. I sank my teeth into it almost instantly. It just melt in my mouth. Soft and decadent. The tear-drop shaped hazelnut petit gateau was even better. But the piece the resistance was the coffee tart. The rich and bold flavours of the robust coffee were evident in each bite and the tart was baked to perfection.

The bon bons were what I attacked next. Each one was delightful. The quality, expertise of the patisserie chef shone through. In fact each one was a work of master craftsmanship.

Convenience is key nowadays, and I love it when I can order things I need online, at the click of a button or from apps downloaded on my phone.

In the past week, with the heavy downpour in Mumbai, Gourmet Delight and Ananya Banerjee’s website

www. Gourmetdelight.in  is a food lover’s delight. Literally. It is a premier online organic food store and gourmet shop in Mumbai and Pune, India. Great ingredients and good quality stuff is what you can be assured of, from them.

Their range is varied -gourmet chocolates, homemade artisanal cakes, exquisite cheese, teas, spices, to healthy organic super foods such as flax seeds, buckwheat, kale and quinoa. What appeals to me is that each of the products you find here is sourced from renowned national and international brands, as well as reliable local Indian producers.

I tried the Namjai Thai curry paste, elephant noodles laksa paste, Indian Basa  and Kara coconut milk. Need I say, my kitchen was replete with fragrant Thai food and the aromas filled the air, as I prepared an authentic meal, so easily and quickly. The right products, obviously make all the difference.

Craving for something Bengali, lead me to Ananya Banerjee, the multi-faceted, talented lady’s website http://www.ananyabanerjee.com

I opted for her prawns kasundi, a typical mustard based tangy sauce or paste, from Bengal and yes, it had a twist – prawns integrated in it, along with shilebata chicken, a stone ground rustic chicken paste.

The kasundi was unique, as it was made with raw mangoes, with the addition of succulent prawns.  Unlike the usual Kasundi, I am used to, this  one, was an innovative relish. One can safely pair this with rice. I loved the fact that is absolutely organic and also without any preservatives or vinegar.

The chicken shile bata too was robust and spicy bursting with flavours and yes, I loved the aroma of my comforting mustard oil. Made me so nostalgic.

Both the products were home style and that’s what I look for.

Of course her website offers a plethora of options, so got to log in again soon.

So, if you are stuck because of rains, do not fret, there are plenty of choices available from the comfort of your home or even your smart phone. Technology zindabaad!

Your Late Night Saviour: Pot de Fusion

Mumbai used to be a city that never slept or at least, was pulsating all night, when I first came to live here 24 years ago. Sadly, a lot has changed since then. One was never worried about getting food at any hour in Mumbai. Restaurants were open or at least some hole in the wall eatery would serve a keema pav or omelette pav at any unearthly hour. Over the years those too have dwindled.

Thus, when I cam across PDF or Pot de Fusion, a food delivery kitchen which delivers food at your doorstep, albeit right now only in the Western Suburbs, from 7 pm to 4 am, I was ecstatic. It’s not only about party goers returning home late and craving some food but even people who work in shifts or even those returning from a journey perhaps.

I called for their food one night. Try karna to banta hai. So what if I was not returning late from anywhere 🙂

My  Chicken Wings in BBQ Sauce, Chicken Peri Peri, Pasta Salad and Gooey Chocolate dessert arrived, neatly packed in containers in a blue cardboard box, duly branded. There was no spilling or mess. Every food item was in perfect condition. Full marks to the packaging.

Pot de Fusion - Chicken in BBQ Sauce

The chicken wings were interesting. The BBQ sauce actually. The chicken wings were swathed in the sauce and had luscious flavours. Chicken Peri Peri too was a delight for the taste buds. Fiery, but the spices were overpowering in this case. The somewhat bland Pasta salad came to my rescue and for once I was glad. The raw onions in the salad did not augur well for me though. And it was a bit too dry. Was quite basic and could have been boosted a bit in terms of presentation and flavours.

The chicken piece in the peri peri struck me as somewhat inadequate. Should have been a little more robust and generous, I thought.

The gooey chocolate, got my vote instantly. Fresh and moist, it melt in my mouth completely and was not cloyingly sweet, as sometimes chocolate desserts are.

The ingredients used are of a good quality and undoubtedly fresh. The concept is of course a winner all the way if it continues to be executed to perfection. Who would not want a proper meal at one’s doorstep even late at night rather than rummage the fridge for something or make a Maggi? Mumbaikars are going to welcome this abundantly.

The menu too is exhaustive and offers plenty of options, both, Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian, global and Indian. Butter Chicken, Red Snapper Fish Meuniere,  Jammu De Rajma or Crab Masala. You can have it all at Pot de fusion.

It is indeed comforting to know that something like PDF now exists. For once, I am glad I live in the Western suburbs!
