A haven of rest and relaxation

Getting out of Mumbai is always an exciting prospect. We all need short breaks at least when we live in big cities and lead hectic lives. My excitement knew no bounds as Alibaug is a place I love. What added to the charm was that I was to experience Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Alibaug, a hotel, which has been around for a while but revamped and refurbished recently.

As our car rolled into Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Alibaug, the vast expanse over which this property is spread, caught my eye.  A warm welcome and quick check in made me feel truly welcome.

The prospect of a stay at Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Alibaug with its famous Aparanta, the all-day dining restaurant and Kokum & Spice, the specialty restaurant, serving coastal fare, a spa, recreation facilities, suddenly seemed more thrilling.

Spread across several acres of land, this hotel is a haven of luxury, rest and repose. Shown around the hotel by the affable Aparup Biswas and Hemang Parmar, Director F&B, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Time had just flown as I was soaking in all the information.

The 156 rooms comprise deluxe rooms, superior rooms, executive suites, deluxe spa villas and executive spa villas. With beautiful views, each of these offers understated luxury.

I entered my vibrant and comfortable villa. The elegant and aesthetic décor appealed to me instantly. My villa spelt comfort and all the possible needs of a guest were anticipated and taken care of by Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Alibaug. Their attention to detail impressed me. The duplex villa was designed aptly with effective usage of space. The living room with a dining space was on the lower floor with a spacious bedroom on top.

After settling down in my room, I enjoyed my lunch at Aparanta, where chef had created unique delicacies. Punjabi food acquired a whole new meaning here as chef gave it a contemporary twist in presentation without altering the flavours. The food was hearty and the flavours robust. Even the vegetarian dishes boasted of exquisite flavours and bore testimony to the chef’s creativity.

After a restful afternoon, I moved to the Escenza Spa, where I was booked for a spa treatment. The spa, I noticed, had a tastefully done up reception area, treatment rooms, steam room and sauna. Other amenities of the hotel include a gym, a library, outdoor and indoor games. One need not step out of the property as there is something for everyone to relax and keep busy.

The spa room was tranquil and I felt relaxed immediately. The serene environment, the expert therapist using the best possible range of products were enough to pamper me.  The Swedish massage with aromatic oils, sounded just like what my tired body needed. The therapist firmly but gently removed all the knots from my muscles and massaged me deftly. I was rejuvenated beyond words. The music however could have been a bit softer. Nevertheless, a surge of well-being enveloped me as I left the Spa recharged ready to enjoy my evening.

Dinner was at Kokum & Spice. We experienced coastal food at its best. The chic but understated elegance of this place impressed me. The spacious seating and mood lighting added to the charm of this traditional restaurant.

Chef had curated a menu for us, giving us a glimpse of the signature dishes from Goa, Mangalore, Maharashtra and we had a lot to choose from. Mangalore fish curry, bombil fry, rawas, prawns, vade. The food was delectable and offered a melange of tantalizing flavours, characteristic of the coastal belt.  The freshness of the sea food and the quality of ingredients used struck me as outstanding. The spices used were authentic and the outcome was an aromatic experience which lingered on my palate. This restaurant was going to  henceforth top my list for coastal food.

I rounded off my meal with the traditional ukadiche modak with ghee or thoop. And of course the paan freshly made by the cute paan kiosk outside the restaurant.

Next morning, feeling rested after a good night’s sleep, after sipping my tea in my room which faced a  lake, I stepped down for breakfast at the all-day dining restaurant, Aparanta.

The breakfast spread was an exercise in choices. The expansive restaurant with several seating options and abundant natural light, was abuzz with activity. The live counters served dosas, eggs, parathas and more. The food was fresh and the offerings varied. The service was alert and exemplary.

After a lazy morning spent walking around the property, I checked out at noon.  I had been spoilt thoroughly by the warm hospitality extended to me. Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Alibaug, the contemporary luxury resort, so close to Mumbai, yet a perfect getaway, transports you to another world nestled in nature’s surroundings.

Coastal Delights

The sheer variety at Barbeque Nation always baffles me. But yes, it gives me an opportunity to try those many more dishes, so I am not complaining.

Sea food is my weakness so I decided to experience the ongoing Best of Coast Festival, that is on till March 13.

The menu was an exercise in choices. There was sea food galore, but I was amazed to see the unique dishes crafted for vegetarians too.

Mr. Joju, COO, Barbeque Nation Hospitality Ltd., told me, “Best of the Coast” is Barbeque Nation’s way of paying tribute to and celebrating regional culinary traditions. Western Maharashtra has unique Konkani cuisine, a culmination of centuries of cooking traditions. While we are incorporating some traditional Marathi food into our menu, we also want to offer our patrons the best of regional and global seafood cuisines and have bought in Malayali, Sri Lankan and Thai dishes. We hope to give our guests an unforgettable culinary experience.”

Grilled-Pomfret-Fish

Well, I certainly began my gourmet odyssey with the best. A well-fried spicy and piquant grilled pomfret. Oh! It teased my taste buds mercilessly. Fresh and soft, the fish fillet simply melt in my mouth.

The squid rings paled in comparison. However, the chili gherkin mayo served along side caught my fancy.

There were lots of chicken options and mutton too in the appetizers, but who wants anything else when the best of sea food is around?

The grilled prawns too were well-marinated and yes, fresh too, as was the basa.

Sea Bass Ambul Thiyal – sour fish curry. Different fish cuts (Lemon Sole, Tilapia fish) in Maharashtrian Koliand Srilankan marinades could be sampled from the ‘live counters’, where the chefs adeptly fried the fish. I tried the Rawas and Tilapia. They were faultless.

Hawaiian Eggplant, Zucchini and Tomato served with Garlic Bread, Aztec Poblano Paneer, Dry Patara and Raw Mango Papaya salad, were some of the interesting Vegetarian dishes on offer. Quite innovative I thought.

The main course offered kosha mangsho, biryani, Manglorean fish curry, Chicken Hydrabadi, shrimp rice and more for the carnivores. The Biryani was a treat, boasted of some subtle flavours. The Chicken preparation bowled me over completely. A unique masala, made the gravy stand out. The shrimp rice too was delicious but the Kosha Mangsho was anything, but authentic and had far too many bones, than there ought to have been. A tad disappointing.

 

Ada Pradhaman – Kerala style Payasam prepared with jaggery, rice ada and coconut milk was a decadent dessert which I enjoyed thoroughly. There were other options like kulfi, angoor gulab jamun and phirni, but I decided to skip those.

As always, the service was prompt and attentive and the place was buzzing. The soulful rendition of songs by the singer, enhanced the dining experience.

For sea food lovers, there can be no better place than Barbeque Nation to sample the best and freshest catch in myriad preparations and forms. And there’s something for every fish lover’s palate!

A Haven of Fresh Food and Feisty Flavours: Pebbles by Juhu Residency

Pebbles by Juhu Residency strangely has been a restaurant I have never frequented although it is located really close to where I live. I decided to remedy this last night. It is best known for its Indian char grilled, coastal & Pan Asian cuisine.. Inspired by the original recipes of India, Thailand and provincial China, it has an  exclusive seafood menu that ensures that every catch is treated individually, blended with particular spices and herbs and cooked in a manner to retain its natural flavor.

An entry into this fine dining restaurant on Link Road Andheri West was a surprise. Teeming with families on a Sunday night, the understated elegant decor and vibrant ambience energized me. Seated comfortably in a corner table, I explored the varied menu. Sea food across all cuisines was clearly their forte. But so were other vegetarian and non-vegetarian delicacies in Pan Asian, Coastal and Indian cuisines.

Vietanamese Sour & Pepper Soup @ PEBBLES

Spicy crab meat soup was recommended to us and proved to be the perfect choice in the current weather. Comforting and soulful, we lapped up this broth. There were generous amounts of crab meat in the soup. Steamed dim sums arrived next. Fish, prawns and crab meat were on our platter. Well steamed, light and with a succulent filling. The accompanying dips were equally interesting and added the right zing to our taste buds.

The tawa fry pomfret was a wake up call for our palate. The spice tantalized our taste buds and we relished the fresh, melt in the mouth fish, fried to perfection.

Fish Cutlet @ PEBBLES

Appams and chicken sukha along with Manglorean fish curry(Rawas) is what we opted for as main course. Could not have been a better combination. The appams were light and fluffy, albeit filling. The chicken was lip-smacking although rich in coconut, typical of the coastal region. The highlight was the tangy fish curry, with the right blend of spice and flavour. It paired well with the appams and we did not miss rice.

Our palate was pleased beyond words. However desserts were inviting enough. Caramel custard is what we settled for. Rich and creamy, it was well set and had the right consistency and sweetness. Full marks to this one too.

The service is good, efficient and unobtrusive. The staff is pleasant, well-informed and articulate. Overall the dining experience turned out to be better than I had imagined. The food is of high quality, with fresh ingredients, and only the best is served. The pricing at first glance may seem a little steep, but given the quality and the portion size, it is value for money all the way.

If you are a gourmet who has discerning taste buds and wants to settle for nothing but the best, head to this restaurant. I am going back soon, for the extraordinary buffet lunch this time.
